The power of Outdoor Education for Preschool children

Spending time and learning in nature plays a major role in the cognitive, emotional, and behavioural growth of preschool children. Children who grow up experiencing nature firsthand are more likely to develop respect and care for the environment and for the future of our planet. Outdoor Education represents an innovative educational approach that helps address two key priorities of modern society: ensuring high-quality and meaningful education while promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.

The latest edition of the course “Outdoor education for preschool teachers” was held in Tenerife from 10/05/2026 to 16/05/2026. The participants came from all across Europe, with Sílvia from Colégio Valsassina, SA, Carla and Fátima from Agrupamento Escolas S. Bruno-Oeiras in Portugal, Lea and Iva from Djecji vrtic Videk in Croatia, Agnieszka and Dorota from Zespół Szkolno-Przedszkolny nr 15 and Jolanta and Jolanta from Publiczne Przedszkole nr 2 im. Janusza Korczaka w Radomsku in Poland, Radica and Tina from Vrtec Mladi rod in Slovenia, and Vasiliki and Christiana from 12th kindergarten of Chalandri in Greece.

Beginning with an introduction to the concept of Outdoor Education, participants explored and discussed its many advantages and exchanged ideas and experiences related to teaching outdoors. Since the course was specifically designed for preschool educators, the group also had the opportunity to learn more about the different educational systems and present their own schools, comparing teaching practices and educational methods from different countries.

An important section of the course focused on practical activities carried out in a natural environment within a local park. The participants tested several games and educational exercises that were highly appreciated and inspired them to create and adapt similar outdoor experiences for their own students according to their specific needs.

The course also highlighted the importance of planning outdoor spaces carefully and assessing them beforehand in order to reduce potential risks. Through practical exercises in outdoor settings, participants identified areas suitable for play and relaxation, as well as spots that could present possible dangers. This experiential approach enabled them to gain valuable skills for organizing safe and engaging outdoor activities for preschool children.

The final part of the training focused on developing green skills and integrating them into everyday teaching. Participants learned more about climate change and discovered practical strategies, activities, and games to introduce environmental topics to very young learners in an accessible and engaging way.

Throughout the course, participants explored a wide range of activities and methodologies that they can now apply in their own schools, proving that meaningful learning can take place far beyond the walls of a classroom.
