A teacher’s job is typically to pass on knowledge and help students build specific skills, while a coach focuses on encouraging and guiding learners through active listening, thoughtful questioning, and constructive challenges. Although these roles may appear distinct, what might happen if a teacher brought coaching principles into the classroom and also took on the role of a motivator?
This idea will also play a central role during the upcoming edition of the course “Emotional intelligence and coaching inside the school and educational context,” which will take place in Tenerife from 09/11/2025 to 15/11/2025. This time, the group of participants will bring together professionals from across Europe, with Marieke representing Stichting Regionaal Opleidingen Centrum Aventus in the Netherlands, and Gunnvör and Margrét joining from Menntaskólinn við Sund in Iceland. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences will contribute to a dynamic and enriching learning environment throughout the week.
The first topic addressed in the course was Intelligence émotionnelle. This concept refers to the ability to recognize not only our own emotions but also those of others, allowing us to be aware of ourselves and our surroundings. An emotionally intelligent teacher can understand their students’ feelings, establish meaningful connections with them, and support them in managing and regulating their emotions effectively.
Coaching involves engaging in a collaborative and supportive dialogue aimed at empowering individuals to explore their own thoughts and solutions through non-directive communication. Central to this approach are techniques such as active listening, fully focusing on and understanding the speaker’s words and emotions, and using paraphrasing et summarizing to ensure clarity and confirmation. To enhance coaching skills, it is essential to ask insightful questions. Participants are encouraged to prepare questions based on the GROW model, ensuring they address Goals, Reality, Options, and Will.
Another essential coaching skill in any workplace, including the classroom, is the ability to manage conflict. In such situations, connaissance de soi and the ability to regulate one’s own emotions are crucial to prevent the conflict from escalating. Conflicts are not necessarily negative; in fact, they can lead to personal growth et positive outcomes. A coach supports students in establishing a constructive dialogue and in exploring potential solutions to the issue. However, it is important to remember that the coach’s role is not to provide the solution, but to act as a guide in analyzing the conflict, facilitating decision-making, and reflecting on their behavior.
Another topic addressed during the course was coaching tools. Participants explored these tools as a means to foster positive communication, both with themselves and with their students, which is crucial for building a supportive and empowering environment. Self-reflection exercises, such as journaling ou mindfulness practices, help teachers cultivate connaissance de soi and maintain a positive inner dialogue, which directly impacts the way they interact and communicate with their students.
This training week allowed the participants to share their common experiences and to learn from their different cultural backgrounds, while also improving their coaching skills and learning how to apply them in their classrooms.
