Things to do in Athens in your free time

The Acropolis and Parthenon
The crown jewel of Athens, the Acropolis is a must-visit. Walk among ancient ruins that once symbolized the height of Greek civilization. The Parthenon, with its majestic columns, is a marvel of ancient engineering. Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and enjoy golden light for photos.

The Acropolis Museum
After exploring the Acropolis, head to this modern architectural masterpiece. The museum houses artifacts found on the site, giving you a deeper understanding of ancient Greek life. Don’t miss the glass floors, revealing excavations beneath your feet!

Ancient Agora
Once the heart of Athenian life, the Agora was a hub of politics, commerce, and philosophy. Wander among ruins like the Temple of Hephaestus and imagine Socrates orating here thousands of years ago.

Plaka Neighborhood
Known as the “Neighborhood of the Gods,” Plaka is a picturesque area filled with cobblestone streets, vibrant tavernas, and quaint shops. It’s the perfect place to stroll, sample local delicacies, and soak in Athenian charm.

The National Archaeological Museum
Dive into Greece’s rich history with this world-class collection of ancient artifacts. Highlights include the Mask of Agamemnon and stunning Cycladic sculptures. Art lovers and history enthusiasts will be in paradise.

Mount Lycabettus
For the best panoramic views of Athens, climb or take the funicular up Mount Lycabettus. The sight of the city sprawling below, with the Acropolis in the distance, is breathtaking, especially at sunset.

Anafiotika
Hidden within the Plaka area, Anafiotika is a tiny, Cycladic-style village beneath the Acropolis. Whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and blooming bougainvillea create a peaceful oasis in the heart of the city.

Monastiraki Square and Flea Market
A bustling square that perfectly blends old and new Athens. Explore the flea market for unique souvenirs, antiques, and handmade jewelry. Nearby, visit the Byzantine Church of the Pantanassa for a touch of serenity.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
For a taste of modern Athens, visit this stunning cultural and architectural landmark. It houses the National Library and the Greek National Opera, and the surrounding park is perfect for a relaxing stroll or picnic.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus
