Building Confidence Through English: A Week of Practical Learning in Bologna

English has become part of everyday life for many people working in education. Whether taking part in international projects, welcoming visitors from abroad, or exchanging ideas with colleagues across Europe, being able to communicate confidently makes collaboration easier and more rewarding. Improving language skills is therefore not only about learning grammar, it is about gaining the confidence to take part, connect with others, and make the most of new opportunities.

The Basic English Language Course for Education Staff took place in Bologna from 31 May to 6 June 2026, bringing together education professionals from four different European countries. The group included Emilie and Anne Valérie from lycee general et technologique pilote innovant international (France), Sanna from Suomen ympäristöopisto SYKLI (Finland), Erika from Benka Gyula Evangélikus Általános Iskola (Hungary), and Henna and Jaana from Live-säätiö sr (Finland). Although participants arrived with different levels of English and varied professional backgrounds, they shared the same goal: to develop practical communication skills that could be applied both in their daily work and in international settings.

The week began by creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment. Through team-building activities and discussions about individual expectations, participants got to know one another while helping the trainer understand their strengths, needs, and learning objectives. Early language sessions focused on introducing themselves, describing their professional roles, and revising essential grammar at A1/A2 level through a balanced mix of speaking, listening, and writing activities.

As confidence grew, the programme expanded into topics connected with culture and travel. These familiar, real-life situations encouraged participants to practise new vocabulary while strengthening grammar appropriate to their individual level. Interactive conversations, listening tasks, and short writing exercises gave everyone the opportunity to use English in meaningful contexts rather than simply completing textbook exercises.

The middle of the course shifted the focus towards hobbies, leisure activities, and everyday communication. By discussing personal interests and sharing experiences, participants naturally broadened their vocabulary while continuing to reinforce grammar through practical exercises. The learning pace was carefully adapted throughout the week, allowing each participant to progress according to their own starting point instead of following a one-size-fits-all approach.

The following sessions looked ahead, exploring how to talk about future plans, ambitions, and personal goals. Participants practised expressing ideas, making plans, and discussing possibilities using increasingly confident spoken English. Every activity was designed to encourage communication and active participation, with grammar always introduced as a tool to support real conversations.

By the end of the week, participants had strengthened not only their vocabulary and grammar but also their confidence in using English in authentic professional situations. Just as importantly, they left Bologna with new international connections, practical communication strategies, and the motivation to continue developing their language skills long after the course had ended.
