Learning Through Real Projects: Exploring Project-Based Learning

Good teaching often starts with a simple question: how can we make learning more meaningful for students? Project-Based Learning offers one possible answer by encouraging learners to investigate real questions, work together, and build knowledge through experience rather than memorisation. While the approach is widely recognised, putting it into practice in a structured and manageable way remains a challenge for many teachers.

With this goal in mind, the course “Introducing Project Based Learning in the Classroom” was held in Bologna de la 5 July to 11 July 2026, bringing together educators from across Europe for a week of collaborative learning and practical training. The group included Sławomir Maskiewicz from the University of Warsaw (Poland), Ewa Karolina Wiegner de la Hangö högstadium (Finland), Sílvia Serra Rodríguez de la INS EL FOIX (Spain), Suriya Khanatsanan și Jose Tena Vasco de la Hagaskolan i Örebro (Sweden), Marina Lantzouni from the 2nd Lykeo of Kalamata (Greece), and Nikos Papaevripidis from the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (Cyprus). Their different educational backgrounds created an open and engaging environment where ideas, experiences and classroom practices could be shared freely.

The first part of the week focused on understanding what makes Project-Based Learning different from simply assigning a project. Through discussions, examples and collaborative analysis of classroom scenarios, participants explored the essential principles of the methodology and reflected on the role of the teacher as a guide who supports inquiry rather than simply delivering content. These early sessions also highlighted the importance of creating a classroom culture where curiosity, teamwork and critical thinking can flourish.

Once the foundations were established, attention shifted to designing effective learning experiences. Participants examined how to define clear learning objectives before planning activities. They also explored how to create meaningful driving questions capable of motivating students to investigate authentic problems, while learning to organise project stages that encourage research, creativity and collaboration.

The following sessions concentrated on supporting students throughout the learning process. Different assessment approaches were discussed, with particular emphasis on continuous feedback and reflective practices that help learners monitor their own progress. Participants also experimented with a variety of digital resources designed to facilitate communication, organisation, collaboration and the presentation of students’ work, always considering how technology can strengthen learning rather than becoming the focus itself.

Throughout the entire course, theory was constantly connected to practice. Working in small international groups, participants gradually designed their own Project-Based Learning activities, applying each new concept as it was introduced. This hands-on approach encouraged discussion, problem-solving and the exchange of perspectives between teachers working in different educational systems. The opportunity to receive feedback from peers helped refine ideas and inspired new ways of approaching familiar classroom challenges.

By the end of the week, participants left Bologna with much more than a collection of teaching strategies. They returned with practical project plans, greater confidence in implementing Project-Based Learning, and a valuable network of colleagues from across Europe. The course demonstrated that when educators learn together, share experiences and reflect on their practice, they are better prepared to create learning environments where students can actively participate, think independently and develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
