In the current educational environment, promoting gender inclusivity and combating gender-based discrimination are crucial for establishing spaces where all students feel appreciated and respected. A significant challenge for teachers is to support students in expressing their individual identities while encouraging open-mindedness that challenges stereotypes and discrimination.

Cursul “Preventing Gender-Based Discrimination and Promoting Gender Inclusiveness in the Classroom” took place from 29/09/2024 to 05/10/2024. The participants came from various European countries, including Gráinne O’Byrne from GRETB in Ireland,
Jannika Klaavu and Pia Järvi from Kiviniityn koulu in Finland, Wanda Klee from Westfalen-Kolleg in Germany, Anna Ros Balagué and Maria Isabel Villar Sanchez from Ins Domènec Perramona in Spain, and Jussi Saarikoski and Hanna Miettinen from Ammattiopisto în direct in Finland.
The course began with a focus on understanding the importance of gender inclusiveness in educational settings. Participants reflected on the meanings of key concepts such as sex, gender, sexual orientation, and gender-based discrimination. They discussed the differences between these terms and the impact of gender-related norms and behaviors in the learning environment with different activities. During the course, we examined the complexities of gender identity and the spectrum of labels associated with it. Practical activities were carried out to talk about gender identity in the classroom and support students’ self-awareness.

We also addressed gender stereotypes, exploring gender roles and various cultural and generational viewpoints. The participants learned about the different forms of discrimination related to sex, gender, and sexual orientation, including sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. Additionally, they were introduced to the distinctions and overlaps between sexual harassment and sexual assault, which improved their capacity to tackle these issues in their schools.

One of the key components of the course was preventing gender-based discrimination through emotional and affective education, so participants were trained on promoting empathy, respect and active listening. Practical activities were designed to model healthy interpersonal relationships, helping students learn how to interact positively with one another.
Another major focus was creating a gender-inclusive classroom. Participants practiced using inclusive language and behavior, implementing anti-discrimination and anti-harassment practices for all students. Activities aimed at fostering inclusion and maintaining open minds in the classroom were also conducted, ensuring that every student feels heard and respected.

The course concluded with some debriefing and follow-up activities. Participants reflected on their learning outcomes, validated their experiences, and received certifications.

Overall, the course offered a thorough understanding of gender inclusivity and provided educators with the resources needed to foster safe and supportive learning environments. Our educators are now equipped with skills to model positive behaviors, challenge gender stereotypes, and assist their students in expressing their individual identities.
