Catching up on the latest educational trends

Engaging students is a complex challenge, and using innovative teaching methods can be a valuable way to increase their motivation and enhance their learning. Thanks to a wide range of studies and research, many tools are now available for use in the school environment. Project-based learning, non-formal education, outdoor education, and ICT are just some of the approaches that can be effectively integrated with traditional teaching methods

The new edition of the course “Innovative teaching methods for teachers, school and adult education staff” took place in Palermo from 21/06/2026 to 27/06/2026. The participants came from all across Europe, with Jožica and Jana from Osnovna sola Grm Novo mesto în Slovenia, Philipp from Berufliche Oberschule Regensburg în Germania, Lina from Godalen videregående skole în Norvegia and Mihaela from Școala Gimnazială Peter Thal in Romania.

Throughout the course, participants explored a variety of innovative teaching approaches that can enrich classroom practice and complement traditional methods.

Project-Based Learning (PBL), for example, allows students to explore content in a more direct and meaningful way by starting with a driving question and investigating real-world issues. By analysing the principles of PBL, participants discovered how teamwork, collaboration, creativity, peer assessment, and constructive feedback help students tackle authentic problems, develop strategic thinking, reflect on their own learning, and actively seek solutions throughout the learning process.

Participants also experienced the potential of Educație nonformală through visual strategies and team-building activities. Starting from practical exercises, they explored Kolb’s experiential learning cycle and learned how it guides learners from concrete experience to reflection, conceptualisation, and application, giving students a more active role in the learning process.

The benefits of Educație în aer liber were also explored through a series of collaborative activities carried out in a park in Palermo. Learning outside the classroom allowed them to actively engage with their surroundings while taking part in practical and team-based exercises. During the debriefing, several advantages of Outdoor Education emerged, including increased motivation and creativity, as well as improved psychophysical well-being through contact with nature and the resulting reduction in stress.

The course also highlighted the importance of Peer assessment și Feedback constructiv as key elements of an inclusive learning environment. Participants learned how to create a positive group atmosphere that encourages students to support one another, learn collaboratively, and develop confidence in sharing their ideas. They also discussed how to give and receive constructive feedback in a respectful and meaningful way, with the teacher acting as a facilitator to guide the process, ensure productive interactions, and help students reflect on their learning.

Finally, participants discovered the use of Gamificare as an innovative teaching method. Through a variety of interactive activities, participants discovered how game-based elements can increase student engagement, encourage active participation, and make learning more enjoyable. Overall, the course helped participants develop a more innovative approach to teaching that they can now bring into their own classrooms.

By Friday, the group had built such a strong team spirit that saying goodbye was difficult. At the same time, everyone was excited to return home and start putting into practice the many ideas and strategies developed throughout the week. Another inspiring learning experience had come to an end, ready to continue in classrooms across Europe.
