Language, Nature, and Lifelong Learning: Inside ELA’s Latest Cross-Border Tandem Experience

A vibrant group of 20 adult learners from Italy were hosted in Puerto de la Cruz for a 10-day language tandem. This experience transformed the beautiful island of Tenerife into a living classroom, proving that true language fluency and personal growth happen when you step out of the traditional classroom and learn by doing.

The Erasmus+ mobility took place in Tenerife de 28/06/26 a 09/07/26 The activities were conducted in Inglés y Español, creating an inclusive and multicultural learning environment. The mobility welcomed Giovanna, Roberta, Ornella, Milena, Milena, Debora, Carla, Patrizia, Federica, Mattia, Nicole, Francesca, Valentina, Mariarosaria, Elena Sofia, Andrea, Maria Vittoria, Andrea, Stefano e Alberto from YouNet en Italia.

The core objective of this mobility initiative was to subvert traditional classroom boundaries through an immersive linguistic and cultural exchange. This mobility was specifically designed to help participants break down language anxieties, transition from theoretical grammar to spontaneous conversations. The structural backbone of the project relied on our core “learning by doing” methodology. Led by one of our trainers, the learning journey moved away from rigid classroom settings and into real-world practice through innovative non-formal education (NFE) strategies. The trainer guided the group through collaborative daily agendas, including structured peer-to-peer tandems both in English and Spanish. The group engaged in daily reflection sessions utilizing moderated group circles allowing individuals to evaluate their own learning thresholds.

Rather than remaining confined to traditional learning environments, the mobility tackled its key topic—intercultural dialogue—by turning the unique geography of Tenerife into a living classroom. Active, experiential learning was embedded into the daily schedule through outdoor interactive workshops and cultural visits. The group visited the volcanic landscapes of Teide National Park and explored the rich historical heritage and colonial architecture of Garachico and Icod. They did many outdoor activities through language-immersion tasks and team-building exercises executed directly on the distinct volcanic black sand beaches of Puerto de la Cruz, including Playa Jardín and the surrounding coastlines.

By the conclusion of the 10 days, the impact on the participants’ multilingual competence was sharpened through spontaneous, real-time navigation of public transport, local markets, and daily interactions with residents. On the last day of mobility participants took part in activities completely in Spanish to strengthen even more their plurilingual capacities.  Personal, social, and learning-to-learn competences were boosted as the adults adapted to a collaborative group dynamic and navigated moments of linguistic frustration with resilience.

This type of experience serves as an ideal reflection on the necessity of stepping out of one’s comfort zone to achieve meaningful personal growth. The group outcomes prove that immersive language tandems represent much more than a temporary travel itinerary; they are a vital, foundational investment in lifelong learning and personal development.
