Finding Balance in the Classrom

Classroom management isn’t just about keeping order—it’s about creating an environment where students feel engaged, respected, and ready to learn. That idea was at the core of a teacher training course held in Athens, where educators explored practical, people-focused strategies they could bring back to their classrooms.

The course, Effective Classroom Management Strategies for Teachers and Education Staff, took place from the 24th to the 30th of May 2026 in Athens, Greece. Participants included Gala (IES de Teis, Spain); Marianna and Daiana (Istituto Comprensivo Luigi Capuana, Italy); Michael and Elke (Kaufmännische Schule Heidenheim, Germany); and Jan (Cirkevná Spojená Škola, Slovakia). From the start, the group shared experiences and built a collaborative atmosphere.

Over the course of the week, the sessions gradually moved from group-building to more complex classroom strategies.

Sunday set the tone with introductions and a cultural activity in the city. On Monday, the focus shifted to group dynamics and classroom foundations. Through interactive tasks and collaborative challenges, participants explored how to build trust, structure group work, and encourage cooperation. The idea of the teacher as a facilitator, rather than just a manager, was central throughout the day.

Tuesday focused on relationships in the classroom. Participants worked on communication styles, active listening, and assertiveness, while reflecting on the difference between inclusion and true belonging. Practical activities helped them understand how to create a space where every student feels involved and valued.

Wednesday gave participants a chance to step away from the training, take in the city, and process everything they had explored so far.

Thursday introduced teaching approaches that support active learning. Participants explored the experiential learning cycle and discussed how strategies like flipped learning can increase student responsibility. They also tested interactive ways to check understanding and gather feedback, keeping lessons more dynamic and responsive.

Friday addressed conflicto management and mindset. Through discussion and practical exercises, participants looked at different ways to handle conflict and how it can become a learning opportunity. The role of feedback, language, and growth mindset was key in shaping positive classroom interactions.

By the end of the course, participants had not only gained new strategies, but also a clearer perspective: effective classroom management is built on relationships, communication, and thoughtful planning. They left Athens with practical ideas, fresh motivation, and connections that will continue beyond the course.
