At a time when education is increasingly shaped by screens and indoor environments, outdoor learning provides an important and refreshing approach. Natural settings help build deeper connections, stimulate creativity, and offer memorable experiences that support students’ engagement, comprehension, and long-term learning.
El curso “Aprendizaje al aire libre y educación de aventura,” held in Tenerife de 17/05/2026 a 23/05/2026, brought together participants from a wide range of European countries. Among them were Ricardo from Escola Secundária de Camões in Portugal; Eva and Viera from “Evanjelická spojená škola in Slovakia; Danila, Anna and Giuseppe from AES in Italy; Anna from AES in Poland; Jonathan from IMT Mines Albi in France; Sara from NIA en Italia.

The course began with an overview of outdoor education, highlighting the value of learning through direct engagement with nature. Participants examined how the environment can act not only as a backdrop for learning but also as a dynamic “co-teacher.” They considered how even an ordinary walk through a city can spark students’ curiosity, imagination, and analytical thinking.
During the week, participants visited several of Tenerife’s most outstanding sites, including La Caldera, the area around Puerto de la Cruz, and El Teide National Park. These guided visits went beyond sightseeing, serving as hands-on educational experiences that stimulated all the senses. In these outdoor settings, participants discovered ways to connect subjects such as mathematics, science, and language to everyday life and authentic situations.
An important element of the course focused on non-formal education, which prioritizes learning through experience. By using accessible materials and reflective conversations, participants practiced creating activities that encourage students to relate their actions to meaningful learning outcomes. This approach fosters not only academic development but also personal awareness and a deeper connection with the surrounding environment.

As the course drew to a close, participants designed and presented their own lesson plans adapted to their educational contexts. Activities ranged from urban geography treasure hunts to creative poetry-writing along natural pathways, illustrating how outdoor learning can be integrated into diverse subject areas. These presentations showcased the adaptability and innovative possibilities of education beyond the traditional classroom.
By the conclusion of the program, participants had gained far more than a collection of teaching techniques—they had developed a fresh outlook on education as a whole. Through firsthand experience, they learned that outdoor education is more than relocating lessons outdoors; it creates opportunities for new ways of thinking, connecting, and interacting with both people and the natural world.
