Safer Schools Through Prevention and Emotional Learning

Creating a safe and supportive school environment is one of the biggest challenges educators face today. Preventing bullying is not only about responding to difficult situations when they happen, but also about helping students develop empathy, emotional awareness, and respectful relationships from an early age. This course focused on practical ways to achieve these goals, combining reflection, collaboration, and hands-on learning.

The Erasmus+ course “How to Prevent Bullying and Cyber Bullying in Schools and Promote Social Emotional Learning” se konalo v Bologna from 28 June to 4 July 2026. During the week, teachers from different European schools came together to exchange experiences and explore effective approaches to preventing bullying and fostering positive school communities. The participants were Pilar Martínez Castejón a María Pilar López Salas z IES Isaac Peral (Spain), a Tatjana Bokämper z Olof-Palme-Gesamtschule Hiddenhausen (Germany).

The week began with an introduction to the different forms of bullying and the dynamics that make bullying different from everyday conflict. Through group discussions and collaborative activities, participants reflected on the roles involved in bullying situations and shared experiences from their own schools. This first stage created a common understanding of the topic and encouraged open dialogue among the group.

The second part of the course focused on cyberbullying and the challenges schools face in an increasingly digital world. Participants explored how online interactions can affect students’ wellbeing and discussed practical strategies for prevention, early intervention, and digital citizenship. Sharing different national perspectives helped broaden the conversation and highlighted the importance of involving the whole school community in promoting safe online behaviour.

As the week progressed, attention shifted towards prevention and social-emotional learning. Through interactive and cooperative activities, participants explored how empathy, communication and emotional regulation contribute to a positive classroom climate. They also examined how everyday teaching practices can strengthen students’ social and emotional skills, making classrooms more inclusive and reducing the risk of bullying behaviours.

The final sessions were dedicated to diversity, inclusion, and practical classroom applications. Participants reflected on how recognising and valuing differences can help create stronger learning communities where every student feels respected and supported. Working together, they exchanged ideas, adapted activities to their own educational contexts, and developed strategies they could immediately bring back to their schools.

Participants gained new tools to prevent bullying, support students’ emotional development, and promote a culture of respect and inclusion. Just as importantly, the week offered valuable opportunities to learn from one another, compare educational practices across countries, and build professional connections that will continue beyond the training.
