Learning Beyond Four Walls: Rethinking Education in the Outdoors

Human beings have always connected deeply with the world around them. Stepping outside the traditional classroom does more than just offer a breath of fresh air; it changes how we think, move, and collaborate. Outdoor education provides a practical way to make learning active, memorable, and directly linked to real-life experiences.

From September 6 to September 12, 2026, educators gathered in Bologna, Italy, for the teacher training course “Outdoor education: a new way of teaching and learning.” The international group brought together diverse perspectives, featuring Roukaya from the American Language Center Mohammedia in Morocco, Anja from Ecole Privée Marie Consolatrice in Luxembourg, and Karike and Meike from James-Krüss-Schule Barmstedt in Germany. This small group bonded almost immediately, creating a warm, friendly, yet deeply professional atmosphere throughout the entire week.

Over the course of the training, the week unfolded through progressive, hands-on experiences across Bologna. The week began with an exploration of the core concepts of Outdoor Education and Non-Formal Education (NFE). Participants unpacked theoretical frameworks like Bloom’s Taxonomy to understand how learning in real-world contexts sparks reflection and critical thinking. Crucial sessions were also dedicated to risk management, practical communication, and safety in the outdoor classroom, establishing a solid base for designing responsible outdoor activities.

The core of the week was defined by immersive outdoor excursions to three key locations: Villa Ghigi, Giardini Margherita, and the Sanctuary of San Luca. These site visits were essential to the course, serving as a direct, tangible application of outdoor education principles. Moving through these diverse natural and urban landscapes allowed participants to experience firsthand how varied environments can be transformed into dynamic learning spaces, fostering sensory awareness, teamwork, and creative problem-solving.

The training struck the ideal balance between theory and practice, placing strong emphasis on direct, active involvement. By living through the activities firsthand, participants gained practical insights and sparked new ideas that they can easily adapt and replicate with their own students in the future.

As the week drew to a close, the focus shifted toward group collaboration, creative scenario planning, and sharing perspectives on the future of education. The training wrapped up with a comprehensive final discussion and the official certificate ceremony.

By experiencing outdoor and non-formal learning directly in the field, the educators left Bologna not only with new pedagogical tools and risk-management strategies, but also with lasting international connections. Above all, they returned home fully equipped and inspired to design meaningful, immersive outdoor experiences for their own students.
