Using a foreign language in the classroom, or while travelling, working with partners, or welcoming international visitors, can feel daunting if the basics don’t come naturally. For many education professionals, improving everyday English is less about perfection and more about feeling confident enough to communicate. That idea was at the heart of a week-long training course held in Atény in December.
From7 to 13 December 2025, theBasic English Language Course for Education Staff brought together a small group of teachers for an intensive but approachable learning experience in the Greek capital. The participants were Loredana, Maria Aurora, Claudia, Giuseppina, Salvatore R., Maria B., Agnese, Salvatore S., Tommaso, Maria T., and Simona, all working in education and keen to strengthen their practical English skills for professional and everyday use.
The week opened with introductions and simple ice-breaker activities that helped everyone relax and start using English straight away. Early sessions focused on personal information and real-life situations.
As the course progressed, the focus gradually moved toward using English in everyday situations. Participants became more comfortable speaking about their routines and experiences, taking part in guided discussions that encouraged interaction and confidence. Through a mix of listening, speaking, and writing activities, they practised forming clearer and more natural exchanges, building the skills needed for real-life communication.
By the middle of the week, sessions invited participants to express ideas about plans and personal goals. Activities were designed to help them connect language to meaning, supporting more extended communication and reflection. Listening and writing tasks continued to play a key role, reinforcing what had been learned and helping participants develop a more flexible and confident use of English.

Later in the week, the language became more personal and informal. Discussions around hobbies, food, cooking, and shared meals created a relaxed atmosphere where participants could experiment with new vocabulary. These sessions naturally led to more spontaneous speaking, supported by listening and writing tasks that reflected everyday communication rather than classroom exercises.
The final day focused on practical communication skills: writing simple emails, asking questions clearly, and using vocabulary related to shopping, appearance, emotions, and the human body. The course ended with a moment of shared reflection, where participants looked back on their progress and exchanged impressions, followed by the certificate ceremony.
By the end of the week, participants left Athens with more than improved grammar and vocabulary. They gained confidence, strategies for continued learning, and the reassurance that making mistakes is part of the process. The course showed that even at a basic level, language learning can be engaging, supportive, and directly useful-especially when it’s rooted in real communication and shared experience.
