Enhancing Well-being in the Classroom: Yoga for Teachers and School

Have you ever considered how adding yoga to everyday routines can boost well-being and ease stress? Picture beginning each day feeling calm and grounded—something yoga can truly support. From a mindful breath to a gentle stretch or a quiet moment of reflection, yoga can positively influence not only individuals but the entire school atmosphere.

The most recent edition of the course “Yoga para professores e pessoal escolar: Melhorar o bem-estar na sala de aula” realizou-se em Tenerife de 26/04/2026 a 02/05/2026. Participants from various educational settings across Europe came together to explore how yoga can positively impact their teaching and school environment. The group of participants included Janina, Franziska, and Maren from Bischöfliche Maria-Montessori-Gesamtschule Krefeld and Iris from Hansa Berufskolleg Unna in Germany, Teresa from HLW Murau in Austria, Maria Luigia from Liceo Scientifico A. Einstein in Italy, Hilde and Louise from Edvard Munch videregående skole in Norway, and Margot, Garance and Emilie from Collège François Rabelais em França.

The course opened with interactive ice-breakers that helped participants connect and build trust. A short digital quiz also allowed them to assess their initial knowledge of yoga poses, as well as their personal and professional well-being goals. This introduction created a friendly atmosphere and prepared the group for a week of learning and reflection.

The programme then introduced the basics of yoga philosophy and terminology, alongside research on mind-body practices in education and their role in creating a more supportive learning environment.

Throughout the week, practical sessions focused on integrating yoga into daily school routines. Each morning began with yoga and meditation, followed by brief journaling to reflect on intentions and experiences.

Participants also explored how yoga supports emotional intelligence and stress management, learning techniques for emotional balance, teamwork, and trust. Breathing practices (Pranayama) were used daily to enhance focus and reduce stress.

An outdoor yoga session offered a special opportunity to practice mindfulness in nature and experience yoga’s calming effects.

In the final days, participants shared ideas and created simple classroom yoga routines to improve focus, relationships, and well-being. By the end of the course, they left with practical tools and fresh motivation to bring mindfulness into their schools.
