Speaking with Purpose: English Learning in Oporto

Fluency isn’t just about knowing the right words, it’s about having the confidence to use them when it matters. For teachers, English often sits at the intersection of opportunity and uncertainty. This course set out to shift that balance, giving educators the space and support to practice, experiment, oraz grow.

From November 2 to 8, 2025, a group of Italian teachers gathered in Oporto for the Intermediate English Language Course for Education Staff. The participants included Antonio and Fabio from IIS Verona Trento, Raffaella and Angela from Don Lorenzo Milani-Bari, and Maria Rosaria, Rita, Mariangela, Anna Rita, Maria Gabriella, Antonio, Rosaria F. and Rosaria G. from Liceo Classico e Scientifico V. Julia-Falcone. Coming from different regions and school contexts, they shared a commitment to improving their Angielski in ways that felt practical oraz meaningful.

The course opened with introductions that went beyond names and roles. Participants talked about their work environments, what their typical day looks like, the challenges they navigate, and how language plays a part in their professional lives. It was an intentional choice to begin here: starting with familiar ground helped ease the group into speaking and set a tone of mutual respect. The focus wasn’t on perfection but on clarity and connection.

The second day shifted away from work and into personal territory. Conversations turned to free time and hobbies, the things that recharge and inspire. Participants described what they do when they’re not teaching, from reading and cooking to sports and music. It was a lighter session in theme but no less valuable in practice. Talking about passions naturally brought out more expressive language, and the group began to relax into the rhythm of speaking English without constant self-editing.

Midweek brought a reflective turn with a focus on dreams and future plans. Participants explored how to talk about aspirations, possibilities, and long-term goals, both personal and professional. The exercises encouraged them to use future tenses with more confidence and to articulate hopes in ways that felt authentic. It was also a chance to hear about each other’s visions for their careers and lives, deepening the sense of connection within the group.

Thursday centered on culture and travel. Participants discussed places they’d been, cultural differences they’d noticed, and what they valued about cross-cultural exchange. The conversation touched on everything from food traditions to teaching practices in different countries. It was a session that highlighted why language learning matters, not just as a skill, but as a bridge.

The final day focused on voices and emotions, how we communicate feelings, interpret tone, and respond to others with empathy. It was a fitting way to close the week, reminding everyone that effective communication goes beyond grammar. Participants practiced expressing emotions clearly, recognizing subtle cues in conversation, and responding thoughtfully. The exercises reinforced that language is as much about listening and understanding as it is about speaking.

By the end of the week, the group had covered significant ground. They’d practiced English in contexts that mirrored real life, from professional discussions to personal reflections. They’d challenged themselves to speak more freely, made mistakes in a safe environment, and learned from each other’s perspectives. Beyond the language skills, they left Oporto with a stronger sense of what they’re capable of and a clearer understanding of how to keep improving.

For teachers balancing demanding schedules and multiple responsibilities, a week dedicated to focused learning can feel like a rare gift. This course offered exactly that: time to step back, build skills, and return home with renewed confidence oraz practical tools for the classroom and beyond.
