Developing emotional intelligence and soft skills in education is vital for building respectful, cooperative, and emotionally conscious learning environments. Throughout this one-week training program, educators from various European countries engaged in hands-on workshops and reflective dialogues designed to strengthen their communication, leadership, and interpersonal abilities.
The course “Soft Skills and Emotional Intelligence for Teachers and Education Staff” took place in Tenerife from 02/11/2025 – 08/11/2025. The participants came from various countries across Europe, including Lucia, Gianluca, Ilaria, Alessandra, and Sara from Istituto Comprensivo Salvo D’Acquisto in Italy, Nora from Liceo Ricci Curbastro in Italy, Marianne, Ingvar, Victoria, and Bente from Stavanger Offshore Tekniske Skole in Norway, Elisabetta from IISS A. Pesenti in Italien.
The week started with an in-depth exploration of the concept of competences. Participants examined the distinctions between knowledge, skills, and attitudes, considering their importance in modern education. The session also focused on essential 21st-century skills for both teachers and learners, complemented by praktische Aktivitäten that encouraged participants to actively apply empathy and mindfulness.
On Tuesday, attention turned to the theme of emotional intelligence. Using Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence model as a framework, participants explored ways to support students in identifying, understanding, and regulating their emotions. A variety of interactive exercises helped translate theory into practice, equipping teachers with strategies to nurture emotional awareness in their classrooms.
Wednesday centered on teamwork and leadership. Participants practiced giving and receiving constructive feedback and explored peer feedback strategies applicable in their own classrooms. They also examined Goleman’s six leadership styles, reflecting on how different approaches to leadership can influence classroom dynamics. The day concluded with a collaborative group activity, where participants applied their new insights to work together effectively, recognize team roles, and strengthen professional relationships.
On Thursday, participants delved into innovative approaches for managing debates and disagreements. Later in the day, the focus shifted to Rhetorik, featuring hands-on exercises aimed at improving delivery, clarity, and nonverbal communication. The sessions also highlighted the value of constructive feedback, emphasizing its role in both giving and receiving during oral presentations.
On the final day, Friday, the focus was on conflict management. Participants analyzed how differing perspectives and misunderstandings can lead to conflict and discussed constructive approaches to resolution. They were introduced to various conflict-handling styles and techniques for managing challenging situations with assurance. The day concluded with a workshop on assertive communication, where participants practiced expressing their thoughts and needs clearly, confidently, and respectfully.
