Empowering Educators: Practical Strategies for Student Mental Health and Emotional Intelligence

Supporting students’ emotional health is a modern necessity. Teachers are usually the very first to see when someone is quietly falling behind, and a well-timed, informed response can truly make all the difference. From 12/07/26 zu 18/07/26, educators from across Europe gathered in Teneriffa for the course “Promoting Students’ Well-being and Mental Health in Schools: Strategies for Teachers and Education Staff”, a week dedicated to understanding, supporting, and strengthening well-being in the classroom.

The group brought together a mix of experiences and backgrounds. Attendees included António from Colégio Valsassina in Portugal, Melanie from Inge-Deutschkron-Gymnasium in Germany, Maria Teresa and Franslinda from Liceo scientifico statale Carlo Cattaneo in Italy, Sylwia from Publiczna Szkoła podstawowa im. Batalionu “Zośka” w Celestynowie in Poland, António from Agrupamento de Escolas Nº1 de Marco de Canaveses in Portugal, Sonja and Carmen from FO Brixen in Italy, Shara from I. C. Magistri Intelvesi in Italy, Sandra from Agrupamento de Escolas de Vilela in Portugal, Patrick from Collège La Providence in France, Inga from Riga Building College in Latvia, Alica from SPŠD in Slovakia, Anne from Lycée Antonin Carême in France, Alena and Gabriela from ZŠ Kubranská 80, Trenčín in Slovakia.

The week began with a deep dive into the core pillars of school well-being, mapping out exactly how mental health shapes academic success and interpersonal relationships. Educators quickly shifted from definitions to action, discovering how to spot early warning signs of distress and lay the groundwork for a school culture rooted in transparency and proactive support.

By midweek, the focus turned toward practical stress-reduction techniques. Stepping outdoors into the natural environment, the group experienced firsthand how small changes in sensory focus can dramatically improve student mood and concentration. These immersive sessions provided teachers with immediate mindfulness strategies to help students regulate intense emotions and manage daily academic anxiety.

As the training progressed, the spotlight shifted to emotional intelligence (EQ) as a tool for building trust, deep empathy, and resilient classroom dynamics. The course wrapped up with concrete cognitive and behavioral frameworks, equipping participants with highly adaptable intervention tools tailored to diverse age groups and varying learning environments.

Ultimately, the group left Tenerife with a transformed perspective: viewing mental health not as a crisis to react to, but as a foundational, proactive element of daily teaching. Educators returned home empowered by a robust toolkit of actionable strategies and fresh insights, ready to cultivate classroom environments where students feel secure, valued, and fully primed to learn.
