Outdoor education and preschool students

Learning to connect with nature has a significant impact on the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional development of preschool children. This is particularly important given the state of climate change and the fact that a generation raised outdoors is more likely to care for and respect the environment and our planet. They are also more adept at overcoming challenges, learning to manage all situations. Образование на открито is an innovative teaching approach that offers the opportunity to address two of the most pressing issues facing today’s society: providing a high-quality, lifelong education and raising awareness of the importance of preserving our planet in the face of the daunting threat of climate change.

Новото издание на курса “Обучение на открито за учители в детските градини” took place in Palermo from 01/03/2026 to 06/03/2026. The participants came from all across Europe, with Sabina, Rita and Sabina from Siuntion Kunta in Finland , Gabriela, Dana and Eva from Materská škola Budovateľská 8 Prešov in Slovakia

Starting from the definition of Outdoor Education, we analyzed and discussed the benefits of Outdoor Education and the participants had the chance to share their own experience with teaching in nature. Because this course was specifically addressed to preschool teachers, the participants also learnt about the Italian education system and shared a presentation of their own schools in order to compare their different methods and approaches.

Participants were able to visit the Montessori and Minutoli schools on two different days, which gave them the opportunity to see how actually work the Italian schools they had previously learned about.

One of the lesson days took place at Villa Trabia. The activities allowed teachers to experiment with new activities to offer their students. Participants also learned the importance of planning outdoor spaces, knowing the selected area in advance to minimize risks. They had the opportunity to practice in an outdoor space and identify the most interesting areas, potentially dangerous areas, play and rest areas, and so on. This practical approach allowed them to acquire useful knowledge to plan safe дейности на открито for their students.

The final part of the course focused on изменението на климата, highlighting that all the participants’ schools are committed to this area and that the topic is very close to their hearts. Finally, the participants focused on creating activities to offer their students.

All participants had previous experience with outdoor education, so they were able to share their thoughts, advice, and experiences, enriching their knowledge and adopting new perspectives that they can put into practice once they return to their schools.
