Drama is much more than a performing art. It is a powerful educational approach that encourages creativity, communication, collaboration, and emotional growth. By introducing drama-based activities into everyday lessons, teachers can create an inclusive learning environment where students feel confident to express themselves, work together, and develop essential social and emotional skills.
The recent course, “Drama in Education: Tools for Creativity, Trust, and Emotional Intelligence in the Classroom,” held in Tenerife от 26/07/2026 to 01/08/2026. Participants in this course traveled from various European countries. Attendees included Jelena, Sunčica and Elena from NIA in Italy; Justyna and Giuseppina from AES in Italy; and Angelika and Helga from KRK Központi Általános Iskola in Hungary.
The course began with introductory activities that encouraged participants to get to know one another and discuss their expectations for the training. The first sessions explored the principles of drama in education, examining how drama-based learning differs from traditional theatre while highlighting its value as a teaching methodology.
The following days combined theory with practical experience. Participants explored the concept of emotional intelligence through interactive drama exercises inspired by Daniel Goleman’s work, using role play and storytelling to develop empathy, communication, and social skills. They also discovered how these techniques can make classroom learning more engaging and meaningful for students.
A strong emphasis was placed on collaboration, improvisation, and intercultural learning. Through a variety of group challenges and creative activities, participants experienced how trust, teamwork, and spontaneity can strengthen relationships and encourage active participation. The programme also explored how drama and music can promote cultural awareness, celebrate diversity, and create an inclusive learning environment where students feel confident to express themselves, collaborate with others, and engage more actively in the learning process.
Towards the end of the course, participants focused on applying what they had learned in their own teaching contexts. Working in teams, they designed and presented original classroom activities that incorporated drama techniques across a variety of subjects, demonstrating how creative methods can be adapted to different age groups and educational settings.

By the end of the week, participants returned home with a practical toolkit of drama-based strategies, greater confidence in using creative teaching methods, and fresh inspiration for their classrooms. The course also provided a valuable opportunity to build international connections and exchange good practices with colleagues from across Europe, reinforcing the role of drama as a powerful tool for creativity, trust, and emotional development in education.
