Learning Green Skills to make a change

Nowadays we are living in a critical time in history where we cannot ignore the topics of climate change and environmental sustainability. Because the consequences of the state of the environment will be mainly faced by future generations, it is essential that teachers learn how to bring out these matters inside the classroom. Moreover, it is even more important to learn how to address these topics, encouraging a sense of possibility of change rather than despair.

This new course “Green skills for education: promoting environmental awareness and sustainable actions in the classroom”, took place in Μπολόνια from 08/03/2026 to 14/03/2026, gathering a vibrant group of professionals from across Europe, including Ângela, Egídia, Rita and Ricardo from Agrupamento de Escolas Emídio Navarro (Portugal), Derek and Frank from Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board (DDLETB) (Ireland), and María Jesús, María Josefa and Leonor from Ceip la Cruz Primary school (Spain).

The week began with some activities to get to know each other, sharing expectations and contributions to the training course, exploring main green skills for school and job orienteering, discussing about current best practices and obstacles faced by the schools embracing sustainable habits and a green sustainability mindset and praxies.

Then, on Tuesday, the group analysed the Agenda 2030 goals, by focusing on hands-on activities aiming at bringing the Agenda goals closer to students experiences and interest. Discovering the Green Action Journal while learning its utility in tracking students’ sustainable actions and habits changes. Using the Net Zero 2050, the global target to balance greenhouse gases emissions produced with those removed from the atmosphere by 2050 to get the students to learn the difference between CO2 sinks and sources.

On Wednesday, we talked about critical thinking as part of the Green skills while putting it into practice addressing the topic of Greenwashing and how to detect it. Discovering the GreenComp European Framework throughout a roleplaying activity focused on Adaptability as a green pivotal skill.

On Thursday, we worked on questioning and debating while learning the Question Carousel Method and Project Based Learning to enhance green skills. During the course, participants had the opportunity to explore additional inputs and activities related to key topics of the training, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sustainable consumption and production, and responsible resource use. They also navigated learning platforms and explored digital results developed as part of two Erasmus+ KA2 projects in which ELA collaborated as a partner: Let’s ACT and CoCo: Conscious Consumption. These resources allowed participants to deepen their understanding, experiment with practical tools, and discover innovative approaches to integrating these themes into their own educational practices. Adressing emotions releated to climate change using the wheel of emotions.

Finally, on Friday we concluded with some outdoor activities for Green skills at Villa Ghigi, a very beautiful green are here in Bologna.
