Calm, Connected, Ready to Teach: A Yoga Retreat for Educators in Tenerife

Well-being is often the first thing to slip when a school year gets busy — and the people meant to look after it, teachers and school staff, are usually the ones who neglect it most. A week dedicated entirely to yoga offered a rare chance to put that balance back at the centre.

Το σεμινάριο “Yoga for teachers and school staff: Enhancing Well-being in the classroom” took place in Tenerife από 16 to 22 August 2026. Participants travelled from across Europe, including Lisa and Helen from Kaufmännische Schule Heidenheim in Germany; Anne, Siobhan and Mairead from Jesus and Mary Secondary School, Enniscrone in Ireland; Flavia, Caterina and Laura from I. C. Cervasca in Italy; Pasquale Dario from Istituto Comprensivo “Lalla Romano” Demonte in Italy; Marcus from Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board in Ireland; and Marion and Ursula from Johann-Philipp-Bronner-Schule στη Γερμανία.

Rather than opening with lectures, the week started on the mat itself. Playful ice-breakers helped the group settle in, and a quick self-assessment quiz gave everyone a starting point — both for their familiarity with yoga poses and for the personal well-being goals they hoped to work on over the week.

With that foundation in place, the course turned to the fundamentals of yoga philosophy and terminology, framed by research on how mind-body practices can support teachers and shape a healthier school culture.

Each day opened with guided yoga and meditation, and closed the loop with brief journaling, giving participants a simple structure for noticing what had shifted, session after session.

A recurring thread throughout the week was συναισθηματική νοημοσύνη: recognising stress before it builds up, and using it constructively rather than letting it spill over into the classroom. Daily Pranayama breathing practice became the anchor for this work, along with exercises built around trust and teamwork.

An outdoor session took the group beyond the classroom walls entirely, using the natural surroundings of Tenerife to deepen the sense of calm the week had been building toward.

The course wrapped up with participants exchanging ideas and putting together short, practical yoga routines they can run with their own students — small rituals meant to fit into an ordinary school day rather than replace it. They headed home from Τενερίφη with more than relaxation: a toolkit for keeping focus, relationships and well-being in balance long after the week was over.
