Public speaking and effective communication are becoming increasingly essential in both education and everyday life
Whether in the classroom or beyond, skills like conflict resolution, assertive communication, and confident speaking play a vital role. Throughout the course, participants strengthened these abilities through a balanced mix of theory and hands-on activities, gaining practical tools to apply in real-life
situations.
To boost these approaches and aiming to achieve those goals, the latest course « Effective Communication and Public Speaking for teachers » took place in Ténérife, de 20/07/2025 to 26/07/2025, with participants across Europe, Suszter Natália from Észak-Budapesti Tankerületi Központ (Óbudai Gimnázium) in Hungary,Maryam Shiani from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in Germany,Muriel Tombrink from International Trade Centre (ITC) in Switzerland,Kristin Göbel and Bushran Bajwa from Hessenwaldschule in Germany,Christin Dominick from Campe-Gymnasium Holzminden in Germany,Katrin Veigel from Steinhöfelschule gGmbH in Germany,Maria Pia Solofrizzo and Anna Trombetti and Chiara Morsiani from Direzione didattica Fedora Servetti Donati en Italie.
At the start of the course, participants shared their thoughts on the key competencies and soft skills essential in today’s educational landscape—for both students and educators. They also opened up about their personal fears and challenges related to public speaking, setting the stage for growth and learning throughout the course.
To ease the nerves often associated with first speeches, the trainer led an introductory exercise designed to help participants recognize and develop the strongest aspects of their own presentation style."
Throughout the course, participants explored various techniques and strategies to enhance their speaking and communication skills.
To begin with, participants learned how to structure a speech using three simple steps. They also explored practical tips for delivering an effective presentation—such as understanding the audience, introducing the topic clearly, highlighting the key message, and using the right tone and timing. At this stage, they also had the opportunity to develop their creativity and improvisation skills in public speaking.
Next, participants explored the concept of assertiveness, focusing on the four main communication styles: passive, passive-aggressive, aggressive, and assertive. Through group role-plays, they analyzed and debated these different behaviors, gaining insights into how each one impacts interactions. This practical experienceequipped them with strategies to better manage real-life situations—such as addressing communication challenges with students in the classroom.
Public speaking is not just about choosing the right words—it also involves non-verbal communication, particularly body language, gestures, and the signals they send. These elements work together to deliver a clear, trustworthy message to any audience. Equally important is considering the audience’s perspective:
being open to comments and constructive criticism is essential for improving both speaking skills and behavioral awareness.
To support this growth, participants were encouraged to give thoughtful, empathetic feedback to theirpeers. This exercise allowed for meaningful adjustments and, in some cases, validation of the speaker’sperformance—helping to foster a culture of trust and continuous improvement.
Lastly, when exploring the topic of conflict management, participants acknowledged that working withothers can be challenging and that resolving disagreements isn’t always easy. However, through open dialogue and personal storytelling, they came to see conflict as a shared human experience—one that, when handled constructively, can lead to personal growth and stronger relationships.
In conclusion, the workshops and training sessions enabled participants to recognize their strengths andareas for growth, develop key skills, and expand their professional networks through meaningful intercultural exchanges.
