Cultural awareness<\/strong>\u00a0is our main weapon against serious issues that are linked to\u00a0<\/span>ignorance<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>prejudice<\/strong>\u00a0in today\u2019s society. Differences define us as a fundamental part of the humankind: everyone is unique and each of us is a source of mutual enrichment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Valuing\u00a0<\/span>diversity<\/strong>\u00a0in the educational field is the first step to enlarge our boundaries, in order to guarantee a wider and more complete vision of the world we live in.\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/div>\n<\/td>\n

\u200bThe latter edition of the course \u201cDiversity in the classroom: teaching tolerance and overcoming prejudices and discrimination\u201d took place in Palermo from 21\/08\/2022 to 27\/08\/2022. The participants came from all across Europe, with Monika from Germany, Breda, Patricia, Louise and Josephine from Ireland, Maria from Cyprus, Ewa, Dorota and Danuta from Poland, Edit and Gyula from Hungary, Noemi, Miriam, Leticia and Nuria from Spain.<\/div>\n

\u200bThrough the sharing of personal experiences<\/strong> by each participant we built a safe place to start, in which we explored different methods <\/strong>to face the main issues<\/strong> that corcerned their schools.<\/div>\n

Identity<\/strong> was our crucial starting point: recognize ourselves through the contact with others is the most important basis for building our social<\/strong> and cultural conscience<\/strong>, and we learnt it through amusing activities that involved creative brainstorm, roleplay, playing with methaphors and games about perceptions.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u200bThese activities helped us discovering how many different aspects hide in our inner selves. Each of us is composed by a beautiful range of colours: sometimes they can match others\u2019 shades, otherwise they can create new combinations by meeting.<\/div>\n

\u200bDiscovering identity was a fundamental tool to explore safely the social environment<\/strong>. The participants had the opportunity to analyze phenomena such as stereotypes<\/strong>, prejudice<\/strong> and discrimination<\/strong>. We discussed a lot about the main reasons of their existence and their outcomes in many social contexts, especially in a multicultural environment<\/strong> like the school<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u200bWe also discovered the \u201chealthy boundaries\u201d of identity<\/strong> like rituals<\/strong>, relationships<\/strong> and restrictions<\/strong> that make us identify with a specific cultural context<\/strong>.<\/div>\n<\/td>\n

\u200bThen we moved to the emotional matter, discovering the five pillars of socio-emotional learning<\/strong>: self-awareness, self-control, empathy, self motivation and social skills. Through the activities that involved emotional intelligence<\/strong> the participants also learnt how to deal with conflicts<\/strong>, exercising empathy<\/strong> in a healthy way.\u00a0<\/div>\n

During our meetings we also reflected about sensitive subjects like\u00a0membership<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0inclusion<\/strong>, in order to recognize how it feels to be excluded and how difficult it is to include others into our dynamics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u200bOn our last day together we shared individual experiences<\/strong> in creating an inclusive classroom<\/strong>, discovering the best practices to do it in the best way.\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u200bThe depth of our conversations during this bright week taught us important lessons that will be printed in our minds wherever we\u2019ll go, finally aware of the beauty<\/strong> of diversity<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
