Learning Beyond the Classroom: Innovative Strategies for Outdoor Education

The participants came from all across Europe, with Merje from Katholisches Bildungswerk Kärnten in Austria; Alexis from EREA Jean Bart in France; Oleksandra, Sofiia and Giovanni from AES in Italy; and Ulrike and Silke from Gruseneck – die Gemeinschaftsschule en Alemania.

Beginning with an exploration of the concept of Outdoor Education, the course examined a variety of approaches for connecting students with learning beyond the traditional classroom. Participants discovered that outdoor education extends far beyond natural landscapes and can also take place in urban environments. One session focused specifically on Urban Outdoor Education, demonstrating how disciplines such as science, mathematics, music, art, and languages can be taught by engaging with the immediate surroundings and everyday environment.

Another component of the course emphasized the use of practical methodologies in outdoor spaces, including local parks and community areas. Participants took part in a range of games and experiential activities that were enthusiastically received. These experiences encouraged them not only to exchange ideas and reflections with fellow participants but also to create and adapt their own Outdoor Education initiatives. On Thursday, participants visited the Anaga rainforest for a 4.5-hour hike, where they took part in an escape room and several activities in nature. On Friday, they went to Playa El Bollullo, where they tried out many different outdoor activities.

The course also introduced participants to Non-Formal Education (NFE), an educational approach closely linked to many outdoor learning experiences. NFE places strong emphasis on learners’ direct involvement in activities, allowing them to reflect on their experiences, relate new knowledge to real-life situations, and transfer their learning into meaningful practice. The concluding section of the course focused on the development of a customized outdoor learning activity for each participant’s specific educational context. After examining the foundations of outdoor learning, studying the ten principles established by Kurt Hahn and their educational relevance, and engaging in a broad range of urban and nature-based activities, participants designed an outdoor lesson connected to their teaching subject. Taking into account students’ ages, abilities, and learning goals, each teacher prepared a detailed learning plan, presented it to the group, and received valuable feedback. The week itself served as a practical example of experiential learning, enabling participants to experience outdoor education firsthand while developing the confidence and skills needed to implement similar activities with their own students.Throughout the course, participants engaged with a diverse collection of activities and games that can easily be adapted for use in their own educational settings, demonstrating that effective and meaningful learning can take place well beyond the confines of the classroom.
