Being in contact with the outdoor has a considerable <\/span>positive impact<\/span> on the cognitive, behavioural and emotional development of human beings since prehistory. Even nowadays it is not unusual to feel inspired, intimidated or even influenced by walking in nature or admiring a natural or urban landscape. Outdoor\u00a0 education is an innovative teaching approach that offers the possibility to address two of the<\/span> most important topics of today\u2019s society: providing <\/span>long-lasting high quality education<\/span> and <\/span>raising awareness<\/span> on the importance of preserving our planet in the face of the daunting threat of <\/span>climate change<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The new edition of the course \u201c<\/span>Outdoor education: a new way of teaching and learning<\/span>\u201d took place in Palermo from 26\/10\/2025 to 01\/11\/2025. The participants came from all across Europe, with <\/span>Carolin, Janet and Diana<\/span> from <\/span>J\u00fcri Kool<\/span> in Estonia, <\/span>Andrea<\/span> from Germany from <\/span>Mittelschule Albert-Schweitzer-Str <\/span>and <\/span>Maria and Magdalena<\/span> from <\/span>Szko\u0142a Podstawowa<\/span> <\/span>Stefana Roweckiego Grota<\/span> from Poland.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Starting from the definition of <\/span>Outdoor Education<\/span>, we explored the diverse ways in which we can guide our students to come in contact with the outdoor, which doesn\u2019t imply to be always in nature and forests. Indeed, we dedicated one part of the training to <\/span>Urban Outdoor Education<\/span> in the city. The participants learned to teach subjects like science, maths, music, art, language and more by testing activities which guided their attention to the surroundings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>
Another part of the course was focused on practicing many tools in a <\/span>natural environment<\/span> in local parks. All the games and activities tested were much appreciated and gave inspiration to our participant not only in sharing their activities with the rest of the group, but also to create their own Outdoor activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Participants also explored the concepts of <\/span>Non Formal Education (NFE),<\/span> a pedagogical approach in which many of the outdoor activities fall in. This approach puts at the centre of the learning process the concrete experience that students live when they are performing\u00a0 an activity or a task. By following the entire cycle and making sure we ask our students the correct reflecting questions, they are able to relate the new knowledge acquired to their lives and apply it. The participants were also taught about sustainability issues relating to NFE.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, the last part of the course was dedicated to <\/span>designing an outdoor experience<\/span> ad hoc for each participant\u2019s target group. After studying the principles of outdoor learning approach, discovering the 10 Kurt Hahn rules and their true meaning, getting in touch with many different urban and natural activities, on the last day of the course the participants learnt to use Actionbound and overviewed theory about safety issues in outdoor education and educational space planning. <\/span>\u200b<\/span>This week was a true example of the efficacy of experiential outdoor learning: with our hands-on approach, participants had a real taste of what an outdoor education activity looks like and acquired the knowledge needed to plan one for their pupils. The participants applied the Kurt Hahn principles in the beautiful Villa Trabia and did outdoor activities by the beach in Mondello.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During this course participants were able to explore a vast series of activities and games that they will be able to replicate with their students, showing that learning doesn\u2019t happen only inside a classroom!<\/span><\/span>
