The week brought together Erzsébet from Monori Ady Úti Általános Iskola in Hungary, Giancarlo, Giovanni and Angelo from IIS A. Lombardi in Italy, Sarah from Association Lycée Sainte Marie de Nevers in France, Rosaria Fiacco, Tamara Bianucci and Anna Paola from Istituto Comprensivo Frosinone 3 in Italy, and Virginia from Liceo Ginnasio Statale “Luigi Galvani,” also in Italy. Despite different teaching contexts and native languages, they shared a common goal: to strengthen their English and feel more at ease using it in real situations.
The course opened with introductions—not just names and schools, but the stories behind them. Participants shared their personal and professional experiences, what challenges they face in their classrooms, and what they hoped to gain from the week ahead. It was a gentle start, focused on building trust and establishing a supportive atmosphere where mistakes were simply part of the learning process.
On Tuesday, the session focused on everyday life and personal experiences. Participants practiced vocabulary and language structures through conversations, sharing anecdotes, exchanging ideas, and building confidence in using English in real-life contexts. Conversations moved beyond the present, encouraging participants to talk about dreams, both personal and professional. It pushed them to use different tenses and express hopes, possibilities, and intentions with greater nuance.
By Thursday, the group had found its rhythm. The session on free time and networking was as much about relationship-building as language practice. Participants exchanged ideas about hobbies, weekend routines, and how they recharge outside of work. The informal tone created space for authentic dialogue and deepened connections within the group.
Friday brought the course full circle with a focus on appearance and feelings—how we present ourselves and how we interpret emotions in conversation. It was a reminder that language learning isn’t just about grammar; it’s about reading tone, recognizing context, and responding with empathy.
By the end of the week, the participants had done more than improve their English. They’d practiced speaking without overthinking, learned to navigate everyday conversations with more ease, and discovered common ground with colleagues from across Europe. The atmosphere in Oporto, both in the classroom and during informal moments around the city, encouraged them to take risks and enjoy the process. For educators balancing busy schedules and competing demands, a week like this offers something rare: time to focus, grow, και connect.
